Featured on Ellen: Houzz Dream Home Makeover

We are honored that Houzz asked us to be a part of an amazing cause, a Dream Home Makeover, for a deserving family from Pittsburgh who appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Matt Onyshko from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania was diagnosed with ALS three years ago, only one year after he became a firefighter. His crippling diagnosis left him unable to work. His firehouse family banded together and took over his shifts, ensuring he would still get a paycheck. Ellen DeGeneres of The Ellen DeGeneres Show learned about Matt’s story and teamed up with our friends at Houzz to give his family a Dream Home Makeover.

In any family home, livability and functionality are key. The Onyshko family described their personal aesthetic to designer Jennifer Jones of Niche Interiors as “industrial.” She incorporated the couple’s existing rustic pieces and used splashes of color to create a warm and casual space that still feels polished. Jones layered different tones of the family’s favorite blue in the artwork, and used long-wearing wool rugs and mixed throw pillows to give the space a cozy, personal feel.

“Since the family is more about fun then formality, Jones chose accessories to match. The mix includes metal jacks, vintage books, a set of hammered-metal bowls, a leather tote and earthy white vases. “It feels more casual and more textured with the basket, the inlaid wood boxes, and jacks in a bronzy metal,” says the San Francisco designer.

The guide highlights several of Moss Manor’s distinct accessories, which can be seen throughout the couple’s home. The designer chose the Marquise Vase Collection to crown the fireplace mantel in the living room. The vases are charmingly dramatic with a vintage flare, the perfect mix of masculine and feminine for a family living space.

The couple’s two daughters had their bedrooms made over as well. “While both rooms are colorful and playful, they’re contemporary. We wanted the rooms to feel fun … but they’re not tied to a certain age group,” says Jones. “The staple items should be something they can grow with, and they can swap out pillows and wall decor as their tastes change.” Moss Manor’s Astronomical Vase Collection can be spotted on the children’s nightstands filled with colorful flowers to reflect each child’s personality.

“The master bedroom was a recent addition to the house and already had a great foundation,” says Jones. “We decided to keep their existing furniture and added a reclaimed-wood headboard to achieve the rustic look they both love. We layered in additional accent pillows and a textural throw blanket, and created a gallery wall of family photos to personalize the space.” She also added personal touches such as vintage firefighter illustrations, along with decorative jars and storage boxes for practicality. The designer choose Moss Manor’s Bronze Jack Table Sculptures to add character to bookshelves. Crafted of solid cast iron, the Bronze Jack Table Sculptures are a grownup take on a childhood classic and lend a playful sophistication to the finished space.
